BG3.27

We are at the Mela Pattabhi Raman sannidhi on the West side of Srirangam temple. Here Sri Rama is gracing along wih Sri Sia, Lakshmana, Bharatha, Shatrugna, Vibheeshana and Hanuman. Swami Ramanuja's acharya Swami Periya Nambi [ Mahapoorna] has performed pooja for this Sri Rama. Here the Lord graces after the Coronation. There is also a picture of Sri Rama along with Sri Sita and Bharatha. This represents the event when the Sandals of Sri Rama [Paduka] were given to Bharatha. Bharatha comes to Chitrakoot to request Sri Rama to return from exile. But the Lord rejects that and instead gives His Paduka to Bharatha and asks him to rule Ayodya. We will see the 28th sloka along with this incident. During this episode in Srimad Ramayana, Bharatha accuses his mother for having asked for the exile of Sri Rama and blames Dasaratha for agreeing to do so. Sri Rama pacifies Bharatha by saying that they could not blame Kaikeyi or Dasaratha and understand that they were propelled by their nature. In a war Dasaratha was helped by Kaikeyi and he had promised her that he would grant two requests [varam] of her anytime she asks. She could have forgotten but she rememebered and asked for the exile of Sri Rama and coronation of her son Bharatha. Dasaratha could have refused her request but he yielded to her request. Thus if satva guna was dominating all these would not have happened. Influence of rajo/tamo gunas have brought this situation, Sri Rama told. So one should realize that atman as such is pure and only with the influence of the gunas persons behave, as mentioned in the 27th sloka. Now the 28th sloka:
tattva-vit tu maha-bahoguna-karma-vibhagayohguna gunesu vartantaiti matva na sajjate
"One who is in knowledge of the influence of gunas on actions, O mighty-armed, does not engage himself in the actions, knowing well the differences between work in devotion and work for fruitive results."
Tattva vittu = one who has understood the entities in their true form properly, guna karma vibhagayo = karma [actions] are done by the three gunas -satva, rajo and tamo, guna = all these gunas, gunesu= in their natural way, vartanta = are there, iti matva = understanding this, na sajjate = one does not involve in karma. That is one understands that all actions are propelled by the three gunas and one has nothing to do in that and in this way removes all attachments in any action. All our good actions are influenced by satva guna. Anger and lust are influenced by rajo quality. Laziness and no enthusiasm are all due to tamo guna. Everyone has all these qualities. We have to analyze why we behave in a situation in a particular way? One could be Sri Rama if one is influenced by satva guna. But with rajo guna the same person is regarded as Hiranyakashipu. By understanding this we will not involve in any actions. It does not mean we will remain passive, but we will not do any action with the feeling " I am doing". This will tend us to involve in the service of God. Attachments will disappear.
